8th Wall, Inc. is an American technology company that specializes in software solutions for augmented reality and Web-based Augmented Reality (WebAR). The company's offices are located in Palo Alto, California.

Its software platform provides computer vision libraries to enable WebAR, along with content creation tools and web-publishing. The platform provides world tracking (SLAM), image target tracking, face effects, holographic video streaming and video recording.

Its approach to mobile augmented reality contrasts with other mobile augmented reality software, such as Google ARCore, as 8th Wall runs in user-space on a mobile web browser and does not require an app download.

Notable augmented reality activations powered by 8th Wall[edit]

In October 2020, the artist Jenny Holzer created an exhibit at the University of Chicago, virtually projecting thought-provoking quotes from the school's Core Curriculum onto twenty-nine buildings across the campus. The quotes feature female authors and touch on issues like justice, truth and violence — including “The Cause of War Is Preparation for War” (W.E.B. Du Bois) and “You Sit Among the Ruins and Lament the Fall” (Mary Shelley).[1]

As the State of Israel was under quarantine in 2020 due to COVID-19, Israelis were unable to attend the various ceremonies and parties throughout the country that would normally occur on Independence Day. In lieu of a traditional open-house, the Israel President Reuven Rivlin addressed the nation via augmented reality hologram, using 8th Wall's technology to power a virtual meet-and-greet.[2]

Nashville artist Erik 'Mobe' Bass designed and painted the mural "Tennessee Tough", located at the corner of Sixth Avenue South and Korean Veterans near the Music City Center. It spans the full length of the building and features an American football with his arms outstretched, with 615 as his number and Nashville on the name plate. The mural features quotes from notable Tennessee figures such as Rep. John Lewis, Pat Summitt and Wilma Rudolph. The project is believed to be the first NFL team mural to incorporate augmented-reality (AR) technology.[3]

Indie rock band Real Estate was scheduled to tour venues in April and May 2020 in support of their newest album, The Main Thing. Due to COVID-19, the group was forced to focus on reschedule dates and launched a virtual "Quarantour" to spread some joy during trying times. Using augmented reality powered by 8th Wall, viewers were able to watch the band perform in augmented reality inside their own homes.[4]

Fashion brand Khaite created AR “presentation boxes” making use of the 8th Wall platform. Each box contained a printed lookbook with fabric swatches; a leather envelope of individual photos; a cream vinyl record; and a candle. The hand-drawn “play buttons” on lookbook photos revealed an AR element with 3-D renderings of Khaite’s footwear line.[5]

Studio Moshon, a Los Angeles-based animation studio, created the portraiture gallery, "Women In Motion", showcasing Ava DuVernay, Geena Davis, Meredith Walker and Dee Rees. This art exhibit married augmented reality with traditional fine art, creating oil painted portraits celebrating inspirational women in entertainment and sharing their stories through AI and AR technology. The Women In Motion exhibit was displayed on-site in Los Angeles at the Women in Entertainment Summit and at ART+TECH 2 at Infinity Festival Hollywood in October and November of 2019.[6]
