8base is a platform as a service (PaaS) that allows citizen developers, or people of limited technical proficiency, to build and host their own enterprise software without having to contract software developers.[1] Additionally, 8base is extensible and allows engineers around the world to contribute new capabilities to the platform and earn one-time or recurring compensation in the process.[2]

The company is headquartered in Miami, Florida.

History[edit]

8base was founded in 2017 by serial entrepreneur Albert Santalo.

In March 2018, 8base announced itself to the public with plans to launch its services later in the year.

Founder[edit]

Albert assembled a team of software developers and designers and founded CareCloud in 2009 as its CEO.[3] He then raised a round of angel investment and officially launched CareCloud on September 16, 2009. In October 2010, he closed a second round of angel fundraising.[4] In 2010, Santalo led CareCloud to win IBM's Silicon Valley SmartCamp program.[5] He also spoke at the Health 2.0 conference in San Francisco.

In 2001, Santalo and a group of executives from The Hackett Group/Answerthink (NASDAQ: HCKT) and Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) founded Avisena, a software-enabled revenue cycle management company in the healthcare industry. Santalo was also the chief architect of Avisena’s proprietary Internet-based software. Beginning April 2001, Santalo worked with the company’s software developers to create the Avisena Platform using a Microsoft-centric technology approach. In March 2002, Avisena began servicing medical practice clients for the first time on Release 1 of the software. In June 2002 the company received its first round of angel investment. In January 2004, the company received a capital infusion from a NY-based family-office style venture capital group. During his term as CEO, he produced 28 successive revenue and gross profit growth quarters. Between 2004 and 2008, Avisena achieved an average annual revenue growth rate in excess of 55% and industry-leading sales productivity, client-retention, and gross margin metrics. In September 2008, Santalo left Avisena. At the time of his departure, the company was servicing approximately $750 million in client accounts receivable.

Serverless Chassis[edit]

8base Serverless Chassis is a serverless, fully extensible platform that reduces the complexity of developing, hosting and maintaining a backend API. A Backend-as-a-Service solution that sits atop AWS and other cloud providers, the Chassis allows developers to quickly configure data model, role-based security, authentication and other common items. It comes with automated backups, auto-scaling, client-side subscriptions and other useful tools.

The Chassis gives transparency to the API schema to make it easier to perform complex data queries and mutations. Developers can use the 8base command-line tool to develop custom “functions” in their favorite integrated development environment (IDE). These functions can be exposed through the API or triggered in response to an event.
